An Ode to Mustard-Yellow and Old Gold

Source: jenloveskev.com via Zoe on Pinterest

I'm writing this post to distract myself from the fact that it's frikkin' snowing outside. This Winter is really starting to take the piss. So let's dream of days when clothing decisions can be based on stylistic whims rather than purely the practical consideration of 'how many layers can I get on my body and still squeeze my coat on over the top?'.

As with my previous 'Ode to Emerald and Jade' post, I'd like to show some love to another group of awesome tones. Mustard-yellow, old gold or whatever else you wish to call these colour, has been a firm favourite of mine for a while, and IMO it rocks hard with navy, black and white. As well as Breton stripes, as previously discovered!

Currently, I only have a few things in my wardrobe belonging to this colour bracket. There's my me-made sunshine jacket (pictured below) and a second-hand cardigan and heels (both seen in this post). But I've got plans to shoe-horn in some more, oh how I have plans....

So here's some mustard-yellow/old gold inspiration direct from the depths of my beloved Pinterest boards. Is this a colour that appeals to you? What ways have you successfully incorporated it into your outfits? Do you think it looks better as certain garments rather than others (e.g, does it look better on the lower half of the body away from the face)?

I love mustard - I've been searching for a cardigan for oh so long but just cannot find the right one. But I keep faith....! Loved all your inspiration photos x

I love mustard. Specially in cardigans and jumpers

I LOVE this colour but haven't yet been able to make it work for me, as it just doesn't suit my pale Scottish complexion! I love the very first inspiration photo (and also that beautiful, beautiful coat...), and am now envisioning a mustard Charlotte, teamed with navy and white stripes... But what colour tights?! Pale face equals practically blue legs...!

I KNOW! I am also tired of wearing winter cloths and cannot wait for it to be nice enough to bring out cute skirts and dresses! I love that shade of yellow right now... but have a hard time wearing ti without looking like I'm going to be ill. Maybe if I wore it in a skirt.... now I'm getting inspired!

I really like this color, on other people anyway. Unless it's just the right shade it makes me look kind of sickly. I love it on shoes and bags and such though! You've got some great inspiration there.

This is my favorite color yellow! I love the high waisted sailor trousers especially :) Great photos!

I love the colour, but find it extremely difficult to incorporate it in my wardrobe. I have a gold yellow cardigan, but can never manage to find the right outfit to wear it with. I don't know. Your mustard coat is to die for.

This dress is almost exactly like the first picture http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/reversed-pleated-dress-102012
first mustard item of 2013?

Like Helen above, I really like yellow, but mustard yellow is really hard for me to wear, it just doesn't go with my complexion. I had a mustard yellow t-shirt back in upper secondary school which I liked until I saw myself in a full mirror, and I looked completely sick. After that I have only had two(!) yellow garments (in twenty years...). But maybe some yellow bottoms would work....:)

Love this colour too Zoe, but for me it works best far away from my face. I like it with burgundy shades too.

This colour really appeals to me but alas, my colouring is just wrong. I'm trying to sneak it in to my life in subtle ways though, such as buttons and shoes! x

Neato! and those high-waisted trousers are really something...good-looking.

I love yellow, but mustard is really not for me, it makes me look like a corpse. I prefer canary or even lemon!

It would be so much easier to do outfit photos if we lived in southern california where seemingly it's sunny 24/7. Everything looks better in the sunshine. Grrr!

I love this colour too, but sadly am not one of the favoured few who can wear it - not near my face, anyway. But I recently found a beautiful old silk sari, mustard and cream with a watermelon-toned red border. (I would never have thought of those colours together!) I turned it into a summery dress, and kept the red, which I can wear, at the neckline. Victory!
These photos are wonderful - so inspiring. I love the sailor pants, and the seaming on that first dress is amazing...thanks for sharing!

I have just been knitting a top in the prettiest mustard coloured bamboo yarn and even if the weather has only permitted me to wear it once I am adoring the way it makes me feel all spring-ready.

As always it seems your sun got lost in the mail and got here by mistake. It's 30C in Tel Aviv this week. Guess I won't be making any jacket this "winter" after all! Time to start sewing summer dresses...

I love mustard and a lot of other shades of yellow (the lively ones -- I dislike pale & banana yellows). I've a very pale rosy-ish complexion, but I can still pull off mustard near the face if I have a collar, necklace or scarf in a color such as black or navy.

I've just made a dress in this colour! (www.sleeksilhouette.com) I love it too! I also LOVE the dress in the second photo, I might have to make a version of that. Blue is also another fave colour, I hadn't thought to combine them! I'm looking forward to seeing what you create.

Funnily enough I just had a customer ask me for a mustard yellow baby hat! It must be in the air. I picked cream and grey stripe to go with it, which I thought was a little weird but I liked how it looked. Judging by your photos it's also a popular choice!

I love mustard yellow :-) I agree that it pairs well with the usual suspects that you mentioned but you should also try it with these colours:
- grey (classic but nice)
- purple (great and lively combo)
- jade... I swear it's lovely!

I only have tops in mustard yellow...oh yeah and a dress... I would love to have heels in that colour too but I can't see myself having pants in that colour though.

All the best,

Christina

I love this color. I have a pair of slacks in it. Still dreaming of getting the soda fountain dress on mod cloth in 'ginger'.
