At Colette Patterns: 'Make Do and Mend: Darning'

When one of my favourite pairs of socks developed a hole last week, I felt it was a timely reminder to learn a skill of my fore-mothers: darning! Having previously waxed lyrical about the importance to carrying these skills on to preserve our existing wardrobes, I could hardly shy away from the challenge. So I cranked open my Make Do and Mend book and got to work. The full instructions I used, the outcome plus some fantastic advice in the comments section can all be seen here at the Colette Patterns blog.

I am kind of anti-darning... When I was about 10 my favourite favourite favourite pair of jeans had huge holes in the knees which was very cool at the time. One day I came home from school and my grandmother had darned up the holes! I couldn't believe it. So I cut out the darning!! I still feel a little bad even now about ruining all her work but she messed with my favourite jeans!

I've always wondered how to do this. Not that I have really wanted to darn a pair of socks, but darning a sweater properly is a great idea for me! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
