Dolores's Baby Quilt!

This is the fourth baby's floor quilt I've made now, and it felt pretty surreal making one for a baby that I was going to be giving birth to! It would be a bit embarrassing if I didn't make one for Lola, wouldn't it?! Considering I went to the trouble of making the baby and all.

It might not surprise you to find this one has a nautical theme! The fabrics have a variety of sources: a gift from a friend, a couple of old men's shirts, the scrap basket at Sew Over It and even some left overs from some sleeping shorts my mum made my dad!

I made this in the exact same way as the others and at the same time as making Theo's quilt as it made sense to buy the wadding and backing fleece for both at the same time. I actually started cutting out the squares for the patchwork before we knew if the baby was going to be a boy or girl, but as I've mentioned before, I'm not a massive fan of gender-specific colours for babies/children anyway so something more unisex suited us better anyhow.

We've been using it fairly regularly to place her on her belly for 'tummy time' to help her to start developing her neck muscles and head control. Hopefully it's also developing a fixation for anchors and boats as well!

Good job! I made my 2 babies (1 boy and 1 girl) unisex stuff too. Glad to see that you are 'alive and well'!! LOL! Are you getting enough sleep yet? Enjoy your time with your baby. It goes by really fast.

That quilt is really stylish (I would expect nothing less from you!) but my favourite photo there *has* to be the adorable Lola and her clearly devoted Daddy!

Lovely, I'm a big fan of lovely bright colours for babies and I'm sure Lola will love looking at the mix of patterns and colours. I made my new baby a patchwork nautical quilt too - it's in the wash as I write, having had a number of little baby pukes on it :)

I still have the one of these I made for my eldest son (now 23) - waiting for the grandchildren! I also went gender neutral, but am loving your colours and nautical theme. The photo of Lola and Pat is absolutely adorable!

I love the quilt. I think unisex is definitely the way to go, especially with the nautical theme. Lola is adorable!

Such a cute quilt! It seems rather perfect for you (and hence Lola...)! Love the colour combination for unisex colours!

Aww cute! If Lola is anything like the babies our friends have, she probably isn't too fond of tummy time . . . hopefully having a nice quilt helps!

I thnk that brights have got to be more interesting for a baby to look at than pastels! I am pregnant again and part of me is hoping it's a boy so we don't get inundated with pink stuff!

This is really lovely and I particularly like how you rounded the corners!

Lola is so cute!

How cute! Did you do it by hand or machine? For baby quilts I like to do my piecing by machine and the actual quilting by hand.

I've made dozens of quilts for babies and while I've done some in pastels for a few people, the majority of mine are bright-colored and fairly unisex. We didn't know the sex of my oldest, since the army would only pay for 1 ultrasound and they used it up doing one to find out how far along I was near the beginning of that pregnancy. Her quilt, and consequently the rest of the room décor, ended up having a fish theme, with yellow and blue being the predominant colors. I've used the skirt for the crib and the curtains for each subsequent baby, though they've all had different quilts. My younger daughter's quilt has suns, moons and stars; my 4 year-old son's quilt has dragons and Aonghus's quilt has vikings, though it's not finished yet. Luckily, a cousin sent a lovely quilt for him as a gift and I can use that until the one I'm making is done.
