Deep-Maternity Sewing: Thoughts please..

Well my lovelies, the on-going adventure of 'what the hell is happening to my body?' (AKA pregnancy) continues... I must admit to being a bit frightened as next week I head blindly into the third trimester. Just how damn big and uncomfortable is there left for me to get?! Only one way to find out.

So to calm myself I have decided to turn my thoughts to my guaranteed relaxant: sewing. Planning how  I'm going to approach any new phase of my life through what I may or may not sew always lends me some sense of control. For a while now I've been collecting maternity sewing patterns, which all seem to be for the last trimester, plus recently I've been donated some more (thanks lovely ladies!). When I went to get them out to consider and photograph I was surprised just how many I've collated! Now, my life doesn't require me to dress up very much these days (read: hardly ever), but I'd like to make at least one garment from my maternity pattern collection, otherwise collecting them would have been somewhat pointless I fear. Hopefully I can make something that'll be day-wear appropriate also if the sun shines, I can prevent myself from automatically heading for the jersey top/tracky-bottoms combo. I was hoping you'd be able to help me decide which to go for... Patterns are roughly organised in chronological order, from oldest to newest.

Vogue 9876: This is a beaut, is it not? I snapped it up on eBay a couple of months ago. It's very 'dressy', fabric-hungry and potentially 'night-gowny' however...

Butterick 594: I'm totally NOT going to make this outfit. Who has time to make an entire lined jacket for only two/three months worth of potent wear (weather-permitting)? Not I. It's lovely though. The skirt has a really weird panelled flap contraption that I can't even be arsed to figure out. Ah, the advent of jersey really couldn't have come soon enough for preggers ladies, could it?!

Vogue 6497: Potentially a bit 'tenty', but with really lovely design details. Lots of options for customisation and embellishment as well me-thinks. What if those buttons were little gold ones on navy? Some anchor trim on the pockets?

Butterick 4722: Another interesting 1960's option. Those side tabs make me think of a children's painting tunic!

Butterick 2368: This one would require a bit of grading, but I might actually find the motivation for that considering the style is just a small spit away from being full-on nautical! I'm pretty sure I have some chunky silver anchor buttons that would look killer on this. It could also be a good layering item, with my mid-maternity stripes T-shirt underneath.

Vogue 7382: Oh this is a cutey, isn't it?! I think the plainer version is white is the most appealing. How on earth has the illustrator avoided drawing buttons on those front plackets? Hmm, maybe they had to avoid giving the impression that there was a functioning button closure. I'd faux-button placket mine to the hilt!

Style 1503: Another potentially tent-y option, but I really like the options for contrast yoke/straps and for choosing a couple of awesome buttons for the front detail. I'd be more tempted to make a dress version if I could find a fabric from my stash that would work well. I think a dress would be more useful at this stage, unless I made the tunic length with sleeves.

Style 4718: Hmm, you could do something super-cute with this sweetheart seamed design. Some piping? Inserted lace? Lace overlay over the yoke? Anyways, not sure I'll make this as it's way too small for me now. When I snaffled this pattern up at a vintage shop early on in my pregnancy I didn't have an inkling of kind of life of there own that my boobs were about to take on!

Simplicity 9427: Umm, with the belt tho isn't a million away silhouette-wise from my recent men's-shirt-to-maternity top refashion, IMO. Not that that refashion fits me anymore, damn you once again expanding bust and rib cage!!! I'm not sure I can be bothered to make something that looks like a shirt refashion from scratch.

Simplicity 3799: Yes I have shown you this pattern before. No I haven't used it yet. I'm going on a short break to Southern Spain in August which will probably feel about as hot as the surface of the sun, so thinking this might be worth making in the lightest flowiest stash fabric I can locate.

Megan Nielsen Ruched Maternity Skirt: This pattern has been leant to me by the awesome Emily of The Botterman Empire. It could be awesome, but I'm must admit I haven't missed wearing skirts at all since I've been pregnant so may not make this. But I may. AGH!! Thoughts please!!!

Oh man, I was soooo huge at the end that there is no way I could wear anything but jersey- I needed some serious stretch! That Vogue 6497 is cute though, and I would totally make that Megan Nielsen skirt.

I only wore skirts when I was pregnant with my daughter she was born in mid August. It was trickier with my son since he was a march baby but i would make the Megan Nielsen skirt! Jill

Make what you really like, like Butterick 2368! I think you would wear it, since it's your style (nautical, right?!). I also find the first pattern adorable with the big collar and the empire waistline.

tialys said...

I think the Vogue 7382 in view C - the white one without Peter Pan collar - would be lovely for your Spanish trip. It's a bit more interesting than the Simplicity 3799 and would allow you to play with some button embellishment.

Philippa said...

You have a great collection there! If you are going to Spain in the summer I would go for the lightest and flowiest dress in the collection (Simplicity) so that you are cool and comfortable in the day and you can put in a cardi in the evenings...but I would also love to see one of the vintage patterns out of sheer curiousity ;) have fun deciding!

Jacq C said...

My vote is Vogue 7382 too - one of the things I learnt from MMM was that I wear the things I love. If you're waxing lyrical about buttons and plackets just looking at the envelope than you will definitely feel fab in it :)

Jenny said...

Wow, you really do have quite a collection there!! I can see how it must be difficult trying to decide which one to invest your time in since you're only going to get a couple of months' wear out of it. Personally, I think Vogue 7382 is the stand-out winner (with buttons, please :p ) but I also like Style 4718- the older ones all look so stiff and I think you'd get really uncomfortable in them.

wendy said...

I think the Vogue 9876 would be soooo comfy and cool, great for Spain in August, but the skirt is also a good idea in that you can continue to use your preggy tshirts. A dress and a skirt would be very useful for your hols.

Jacinta said...

I agree you should make what you love ... no point making something that isn't your style pregnant or not.
I'm 30 weeks (but winter here) and the only thing I'm comfy in is stretchy tops and skirts. If you want something that can be dressed up but you still feel like you're in track pants then make some yoga waistband maxi skirts. great on holidays as no need to iron . :)

Kathryn said...

Tee Butterick one is lovely, and totally your style. However I agree with some of the other comments that, with your Spain holiday maybe the white Vogue one with the placket would get more wear. I've got the Megan Nielson Rie dress to make up (when I can get to Walthamstow for some cheap jersey for a trial run) so I'll let you know how that goes and would be happy to pass that on to you.

Jane Elise said...

I like the little white vogue one too. I'd be steering away from buttons though. Too much potential for pulling and straining.

Not very interesting but my go to wear for the last trimester in hot summer was maxi skirts with wide shirred bands. I then wore them afterwards while my stomach went back to normal.

Charity Shop Chic (Sally) said...

Vogue 7382 would get my vote. I think Amy (dianaandme.co.uk) made the Megan Nielsen skirt recently and it looked great!

Ruth said...

Having sewn for a pregnant lady recently I did some research about how much your bump actually does expand in the third trimester and, interestingly, the answer is - not much after the seventh month. The lady I was sewing for insisted that she did become "huge" later on with her two previous pregnancies so I added to the bump section of the garment I was sewing. I then saw through the rest of the pregnancy that it hadn't been necessary. She actually didn't expand as much as she had predicted. In my own pregnancy towards the end my upper arms and thighs expanded (breastfeeding depot - I lost it all and more by breastfeeding and walking everywhere in the year after my son's birth). For my own third trimester I just added two very bright cotton print and indeed quite tent-like dresses with nice features round the neckline to my range of clothing. If you can't wear a bright cotton tent with a huge print when you're pregnant, when can you?

Ginny said...

I agree with the masses here, Vogue 7382 is lovely! I also like Style 1503. It's very similar to a top I made and wore to death when I was pregnant (even has similar pockets!). I got around the perils of tenty maternity clothes by wearing a wide belt above my bump. I found it helped define a narrow point on the body so it looked like I still had some sort of shape, and made the baby bump look a lot less huge and more definitely a baby bump because the excess fabric was pulled in. Though I realise not everyone will feel comfortable wearing a belt at this point in the pregnancy.

And yes, I did get bigger in the last trimester, to the point where my previously happy-to-stretch skin suddenly gave up and exploded into stretchmarks around the 7 month mark. Sorry, that's probably not encouraging lol.

Kestrel said...

I have a small number of maternity sewing patterns but haven't made any of them during my pregnancy and at 36 weeks won't be starting now! It's amazing how differently every woman's body reacts to pregnancy, you just do not know what shape and size you'll be, and when.
I love the Style 4718 but I couldn't be bothered to grade either, most of my maternity sewing quality has been seriously shoddy as I know it won't get worn for long!

Anonymous said...

You certainly have plenty of patterns to choose from. One of things I've noticed from pregnancy is that we all 'expand' differently. You'll also probably find that as you near the end that 'bump' will drop down and you'll have more room around your ribcage.
I've always liked things in pregnancy that can be worn afterwards - I'm afraid we don't ping back to pre-pregancy shape instantly. So for me, it would have to be breastfeeding friendly. So a dress that has buttons, a tunic than can be lifted up or just plain old separates.
That said, I really like both the Vogue patterns :)
Good luck in making your decision x

LisaRae said...

These patterns are all cute but they do tens to look tent-esque. I'm not sure how our mothers got through pregnancy is the hideous clothing that were their options. Maternity wear now seems to celebrate the bump rather than hide it. I survived a summer pregnancy on capris and stretchy t-shirts myself. Some of those shift rtpe dresses could be cute if paired with capri length leggings (if you don't want to wear dresses)

Kirsty said...

I wish I'd been a sewer during my pregnancies. I became huge in the last trimester - but it's a different huge because I just became all about the belly and despite the boobs getting bigger - they were well and truly balanced by the belly. Definitely go with Vogue 7382. It will be great post baby as well. I'll put in a vote for Megan Nielson as well, I think her whole maternity range is lovely.

Roobeedoo said...

I reckon you need to factor in breast-feeding potential at this stage, unless you are sure you are going to hit the bottle. You will probably stay huge-boobed for months after the birth if you breast-feed, so nothing too fitted up top.
Comfort is your priority - jersey, thin and floaty crease-resistant viscose. Especially in the heat!
I like that Megan Nielsen skirt but over-bump elastic can feel really restrictive.

Tanit-Isis said...

My fave is the first one! I think it could still be fairly practical in a light flowy fabric. :)

I confess one of the first 70s patterns I ever bought turned out, when I got home, to be a maternity pattern. It's still super cute!

Emily said...

I love this. I have just reached 21 weeks and starting to feel like my wardrobe might need a rethink!! my empire line dresses just aren't going to last me as long as i thought - eek. I love those tunic top and skirt patterns - have you seen the 'kangaroo' style ones - some have an elastic insert but some just have a big gap for your tummy to stick through!! maadness. I would say though don't be scared of 'tenty' I had a couple of tent dresses pre-pregno and am finding them just so comfortable at the moment. And if you use a light floaty fabric they hang well and not always as tentish as you might imagine (also SO easy to make!)but i know why you might not be so keen...

dannyscotland said...

Whichever one you choose, make it loose and flowing. The later it gets, the less you'll want stuff touching you. Comfort is key. And coolness. Air flow is good. Also something comfy when you're sitting as you may feel like doing a lot more of that.

Hang in there, the best part is still on its way! And then all of this simply won't matter any more. :-) (Because of the baby, I mean)

Hearth said...

I had big babies, and am fairly short - so the answer, "how big am I likely to get" is - well, depends on the baby, and depends on you! I got ENORMOUS, and at the very end was alternating two tent dresses in light fabrics.

Make something (whatever it is) enormous in whatever fabric/style you can stand wearing too much. Plan on fabric weight to be about 25% lighter overall than you normally wear - at the end you'll be warmer than normal too.

You might like a trapeze dress, considering your personal style.

Katie said...

I'm also in the deep maternity phase (30 weeks), and I agree with Roobeedoo and thereshesews that at this point, it's best to make something that can be a "transitional" piece and work for breastfeeding also. At least that's the path I've chosen to take! That way you can get more than 3 months of wear out of something that you've put your hard work into. That said, I think that Vogue 6497, Butterick 2368 (assuming those are functioning buttons), and Simplicity 9427 look like the best "transitional" pieces. Vogue 7382 would work if you could convert the faux button placket into a functioning one. A couple of breastfeeding-friendly "maternity" items will be very handy as your stomach slowly shrinks back to a normal size after baby is born. You'll still look several months pregnant for a few weeks after birth!

I also HIGHLY recommend the Megan Nielsen pattern. I made it a couple of months ago for MMM, and it's very quick and easy and super versatile. With both my prior pregnancies, my belly continued to grow to enormous proportions through the third trimester, and the bigger I got, the less comfortable I was in pants. I can only imagine that will be true with this one, particularly in the heat of summer! I also like that the Megan Nielsen pattern is as far as you can get from a "tent," so you can show off those baby curves!

Alice said...

Having done this last summer, I say tent dress. I LIVED in my black cotton tent dress (Simplicity 3778) for most of August. Style 1503, for preference. I hit a point where I was so huge and my back was so uncomfortable that I just couldn't tolerate anything tight around my ribcage. So I think you'll get the most wear out of that style, rather than needing to abandon it at 34 weeks or so.

Vogue 7382 is really nice too, but when I made an empire-style dress late in pregnancy (blogged here) it didn't really get a ton of wear. The fitted bits was just so awkward when I was feeling huge and sweaty and everything. Fortunately that dress has been great post-pregnancy!

Another thing to beware: it's quite common to gain ANOTHER cup size or two of bust at the very end (think final 6-8 weeks) as your body prepares for breastfeeding. So be careful about investing time sewing anything that relies on your current bust size because you could really be disappointed.

Making up one of the more fitted styles in a semi-stable knit might be a good way to go too. Good luck with it!

Vougue 7832, I would concur. In a lightweight double gauze or something. I soooo think you should make the Megan Nielsen skirt in a bold nautical stripe! Something like this but a preggers version:

I made the Megan Nielsen skirt back in May and it's surprisingly comfy - the elastic sits above the belly, so it's not restrictive at all, and I even managed to feel sexy. I made mine with a bamboo stretch French terry and it's really soft. I've been thinking about using the skirt pattern with the top of an Ottobre maternity top pattern to make a dress. That way I can have a dress and still use jersey. Right now my problem is making things with the fabric I have already in my stash that I might want to wear after this baby. Also, I have to agree with the others who vote for the modern Simplicity with the loose, flowy dress. I personally get super hot when I'm pregnant and in the summer it's at least twice as bad.

As for expanding bumps, it all depends on your body, how many babies you've had, etc. - every pregnancy is different. I know how huge I got with my last pregnancy, and this one looks to be on track for the same type of thing, but with my girls that wasn't the case.

Gretchen said...

I am 5 months pregnant and grappling with similar issues. Last month I made the version B of Simplicity 3799 (the top) out of some stash fabric and absolutely love it (now that it's warm enough to wear). It's a fairly quick and easy make, too.

Sewing Mum said...

Hello! I know this may not be particularly helpful to suggest an additional pattern into the mix, but... I'm due to give birth tomorrow (eek!). The only thing I have made to wear for pregnancy is Burda 7630 - an empire line dress made out of polka dot silk. After procrastinating over it for ages, I LOVE wearing it. Even if, at 40 weeks, I do have a ridiculously big bump that looks even bigger in this dress. I am thinking the dress will be easy enough to adjust for next summer (when hopefully much slimmer)... http://kitchentablesewing.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/the-polka-dot-tent.html
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! Janet

When I was pregnant anything floaty made me feel (and look) like the back end of a bus. I would definitely go for jersey to accentuate the bump. I do like that skirt though. Looks comfy!

Aquarijenn said...

I think Vogue 7382 and Style 4718 get my top votes. FWIW, I made two maternity skirts for my last pregnancy. I enjoyed the coolness factor of them, but found them to be very impractical. As you have probably noticed, bending over is very difficult whilst pregnant and you can't squat in a skirt! LOL

Xenia Kathryn said...

Lovely patterns! The white Vogue sundress is so adorable. Any other dress that can button down the front will serve double duty as nursing-friendly postpartum. It's such a treat to have something cute to wear right after the baby's born (even if it is "maternity").

That said, that current-day Simplicity pattern looks immensely comfortable and super easy-- win, win!

I didn't start sewing until after having my baby, but I wish that I would have spent mor funds on nursing gear instead of maternity clothes. The amount of time I spent in the third trimester (3 months) vs. time spent nursing (going on 17 months with no end in sight) means I've gotten much more use out of anything nursing-friendly. If you're planning on breastfeeding, you might want to get started on some nursing tanks that you can wear under anything. Just my advice!!

frk.bustad said...

It's funny how almost all the patterns look lik they're just A-lined tunics not necessarily for pregnant ladies! I would go for Vogue 9876 in a soft fabric so it can follow your body contours more.

From your post, I might consider starting sewing maternity clothes way before I get pregnant! I am a slooow seamstress afterall...

Anonymous said...

My advice would be to stick with making either something you love and will wear a lot for a few months, or something stretchy and soft and wearable for breastfeeding (basically any top and pants or skirt combo but not dresses unless they open at the top). Around the end of my pregnancy everything felt uncomfortable and I could only deal with the softest and stretchiest fabrics. The idea of buttons and zips was completely unappealing, even though I usually like those sorts of details.

Good luck!

- Kate

Love these patterns! I found anything with a yoke above the boobs while pregnant made me look huge as the fabric hangs off them.

That maternity skirt for sure and make sure all the tops or dresses you have now are compatible with nursing. And maternity skirts you can get away with wearing post partum for at least three months. That's the rule. Three months. Or maybe five. ; )
Have a lovely third trimester!

My mom did make me a suit like the one you had, but haha didn't get a chance to go anywhere. By the time I could have worn it anywhere due to size, she was born prematurely.

Kid is now 21 months and I am just NOW getting to sew again.
