A couple of posts ago, the lovely Jessica left a comment suggesting that I reach for my trusted Simplicity 3835 to help with my panic-stitching of a new black work wardrobe. Well, she is clearly a visionary as that's exactly what I did to produce this blouse fashioned from some type of black stretchy cotton with a plush polka dot effect. I redrafted the sleeve pattern as I found the original one too tight and I added an elastic casing around the cuff. It received it's first wearing for work on Day 17 with my self-stitched black sailor trousers and pants.
Day 18:
Another rapidly stitched new top, this time using the Port Elizabeth top available on Burdastyle. I used some super cheap 100% cotton and added a little patch pocket to the breast to prevent it from being the worlds plainest top. It's pretty cropped but I got around that by pairing it here with my high waisted Jenny skirt (also from Burdastyle). Oh, and self-stitched pants and leopard coat of course.
Day 19:
A day off! More training about wearing self-stitched navy tulip skirt, ruffle front jumper, vest, pants and leopard coat.
Day 20:
No photo, sorry. I actually wore the same outfit as Day 6 but I ended up doing a 14 hour shift at work after which I came home and put my pyjamas on before I remembered to get a photo taken. My pyjamas are, in fact, self-stitched also but I realised that after that amount of time at work (with only half an hour of the 14 hours spent sitting down, may I add) I looked like something you'd find at the bottom of a dustbin, so decided the day was best left undocumented.
Day 21:
Ahh! My first opportunity to explore my new home town with my boy. The sun blessed us with it's presence all day. I wore self-stitched sailor trousers, bustier line T-shirt, Saint Cardigan and pants. Ahoy!

Love your style! Sometimes basic black can be boring but adding texture in the fabric does jazz it up a bit. Love the leopard coat, love it!
It's kind of funny that you run into the same problems making pictures after work as I do. Even though my toughest days are only 9 houres long... I found it best to make the pic in the morning just before leaving the house. The light isn't any better than in the evening but I feel and look better a lot. Also black is a hard colour to photograph anyway as details just get swallowed.
I'm looking forward to more inspiring pictures. :)
Looks like you're settling in to your new life with aplomb! Can't believe the mileage that you're getting out of your few black pieces ... guess that's truly a testament to how little we need to make our wardrobes work! And the S3835 top looks like it integrates perfectly :-). Those sleeves ARE too tight, love your mods!
I'm enjoying your black wardrobe as well. I constantly have that debate with myself whether or not I should use black (or blue, say) as a basic, esp. since black feels so formal and I live in pretty temperate climates. But seeing you reminds me that black goes a long, long way. It pretty much always looks fabulous. Great new pieces! :)
Hi Zoe
I am Moka from Barcelona (I just missed your sewing club here which I am gutted about as I love your style!). I wanted to aks where did you get your fabric here, all I know is the expensive shops that I can afford specially for begginers' projects. Thanks for sharing!
I love your sailor trousers - nautical but nice!
You have such a cute blog and I love the outfits you've come up with for SSS. :) I decided to participate a bit late (missing day 1 and not having a picture for day 2), but I wanted to thank you for putting this together. It's been a challenge because I'm still relatively new to sewing and only have so many things in heavy rotation, but I've been having fun with it. Sure, a lot of pieces I've worn to death this month, but it's also been so nice to wear something handmade every day. :)
Such cute pants...
I thought I left a comment on your post last week but had internet problems and now realise it didn't work.. just wanted to let you know I heard Amelia Chappelow talking about SSS on Triple J (Australian radio station) last Friday morning as she is participating!! So SSS is famous! But I can't find her blog ... if anyone has info please let me know! I would like to check out what she's wearing...

Thanks Amber for your lovely comment and thanks Fourth Daughter for the exciting news, please let me know if you find out anything more or any relevant links xxx
Hi Moksi, sorry we missed each other in bcn. I used to go to Ribes i Casals on Roger de Lluria and the other couple of fabric stores on that street. Pretty expensive but a good selection. I wish you all the best! xxx
Thank you very much Zoe! I'll keep you posted on my progress (that is if there is any -:))). Good luck with new work conditions! By the way, what do you do? Couldn't figure it out in your blog and I'm very curious...
Well Moksi, thanks for your interest, I'm actually a supervisor at a patisserie now, though I used to teach English and do fashion trend research when I live in bcn. What do you do? Where are you from? Do you know about the merceria Santa Anna on Portal De L'Angel? xxx
Oh no!!!! I just realised that I sound like a real gossip, which I didn't intend to... hopefully by now you know Spanish personality and lack of subtlety... I was just curious as to why you had to wear black all the time, hope you don't hold grudges for too long!!! As for myself, I am a slave in a multinational working in marketing for 50 hours a week (so much for the industrial revolution!) and have very little time left to learn to sew (or anything else for that matter...). Just to let you know I have been to Ribes i Casals and almost pass out of happiness, I spent a small fortune (a total of 33 euros!) and have now lots of projects to complete. Hope to keep in touch. Take care!
