Me-Made-May 2020!

Well, if it was a ‘normal’ year I would have announced the approaching Me-Made-May challenge on the 1st April. I would have written a post explaining what the challenge is, why you might want to take part, and how you can customise it to your own specifications and desires to make it truly useful and enjoyable for YOU. Well this year has most certainly failed to present itself as a ‘normal’ year, eh?! I think it’s safe to say that 2020 so far has been collectively the weirdest and most terrifying few months in most people’s memories. When the 1st April rolled around two weeks ago, my emotions were everywhere, and the last thing I felt like adding to my life was an additional challenge, and I felt that most people would probably feel the same so I didn't mention MMM.

But since then I've been thinking about it some more. There are a number of elements that Me-Made-May annually brings that people might actually appreciate, and benefit from perhaps now more than ever. Much of the world is currently on lock down (/sheltering in place/self isolating/practising social distancing/whatever it's called where you live). Many of us who are lucky enough to not have to go outside very much and risk infection, are spending so much more time at home in our pjs or lounge wear, feeling lonely and miserable and not at all ourselves. Maybe a gentle, 'light' version of the Me-Made-May challenge IS what some of us may feel we need right now?

What IS Me-Made-May?

  • MMM is a personal challenge to wear your handmade items more often, or in different ways somehow, to help you improve your relationship with your handmade wardrobe.
  • It is entirely personal: you can set the specifications of your challenge as you wish so that it will help YOU. Think about what you would like to improve and/or learn.
  • You do your challenge for the duration of May.
  • It's entirely up to you whether you wish to keep your challenge entirely to yourself, or share some or all of it with others. If you wish to share the odd (or daily!) photo or comment on social media, please use the hashtag #memademay2020 so other participants can find you and cheer you along.

But the whole world has flipped upside down, should I take part?

Totally up to you. I wouldn't blame you if you took one look at the title of this blog post and screamed "NO WAY!" and slammed down the lid of your laptop. However, if you do fancy challenging yourself this year, PLEASE DO SO GENTLY. The last thing any of us needs right now is an additional challenge to complicate our lives.

But what might I gain by taking part?

You know what I need right now? I need a reason to wear something other than leggings every day. I need a reason to pull out my favourite handmade garments that I know will make me feel more like myself. I need something fun to think about each morning, rather than dwelling on the news headlines. I need to feel more connected with a community (of makers) and have a reason to celebrate each other and our achievements. Oh, and I want be nosy and see what you've made and how you wear it!

Ok, I want some of that too, what do I do now?

You need to think about the specifics of your (GENTLE) challenge. Think about what you'd like to achieve/improve/learn by the end of the month, and what you can do throughout the month to make that happen. Normally, I ask participants to fill out a pledge and post it in the comments of this post. If you would like to do that, awesome. If you'd like to share it on Instagram or anywhere else, then also awesome:

'I, (insert name or username here), pledge to (insert specifics of your challenge here) throughout May 2020'

So as an example, here's mine:

'I, Zoe aka @sozoblog, pledge to wear only handmade garments in unique combinations as much as possible throughout May 2020'.

If you have any questions or queries, please email me at sozoblog (at) g mail dotcom, or message me on IG @sozoblog. Please remember, if you do want to take part, be as gentle and kind to yourself as possible, and DO NOT beat yourself up if you wake up on 1st May and think, 'actually, no I can't be arsed'!. This is meant to be fun and useful and affirming! Please take care of yourselves, lots of love xxx

I've been looking forward to Me Made May despite the oddness of our times because I normally am too busy to participate and this year I can. Not only that, I'm quietly making a lot of clothes right now because I am re-sizing my wardrobe to fit me better.

For MeMadeMay2020 I plan to do the following (gently and with no self-recrimination):

* Evaluate every piece of self-made clothing in my collection for wear, fit, and whether it works with my current personal style. Remove garments that don’t meet my needs any longer.
* Dress in self-made clothing every day and document on Instagram.
* Let go of expectations around how my photos should look, while at the same time working on a better photo set up.

Really, I want a little bit of normal in my life, and sewing is a big part of that right now.

I’m so glad you decided to go forward with this tradition. Traditions and predictability are so important and comforting right now. I’ve been watching MMM for a few years now and enjoying it very much. I’m still a beginner with very few me-makes in my wardrobe. This year I did the Seamwork wardrobe planning workshop and so my MMM goal is to finish that 100 Acts of Sewing shirt #1 in my wardrobe plan, photograph me wearing it as part of my existing wardrobe, and post it. Very gentle indeed!

I found your blog several years ago and liked the idea of Me Made May. But simply didn't have enough me-made clothes to participate. I still don't, but since sewing some face masks, I decided to start on my fabric stash for clothes. I'll be lucky to make a dent in my collection during this sheltering. But a "stash of a hundred pieces begins with a single garment." I'm committed to using what I own and have inherited from my mom. I've got incredible vintage fabrics and patterns. I'm committed to at least wearing my hand knit socks once a week during May and to finishing the denim skirt and peasant blouse I want for summer.

Thank for keeping this going in a gentle and encouraging way. I pledge to wear a me made outfit each day, to sew more underwear and to celebrate the joy of a Handmade wardrobe.

Would you believe I woke up this morning thinking about Me Made May? I was wondering when you would post about it, and wondering how many people would be joining. I've been thinking a lot about what my challenge should be this year and to be honest, I still don't know. But it's important to me to take part, and I have a couple more weeks to finalize my pledge. Until then, I just pledge to take part, and thank you for hosting!!

I, Alison of Bagladybird - Learn to Sew, pledge to wear only me made outfits troughout may and consider any gaps in my wardrobe throughout May 2020.

This year will definitely be different, but thank you for keeping up the MMM tradition! :) In these more home-bound conditions I pledge to try to wear at least 2 me-made garments or accessories each day during the May of 2020! :)

I've been waiting all year, thanks for keeping this challenge going this extremely challenging year. I've been wondering if we can get a restart to 2020, you know, just cancel the whole year and in January/21 just start over with 2020 again.

I don't know if I can participate every day but will surely try. My challenge will be the pic since the fitness room in the building has been locked up it's going to be interesting. I really loved the walls of mirrors. I might have to commandeer the elevators because there's a wonderful wall of mirror in them.

I Kathy of "upcycledcopycat" pledge to wear some memade pieces throughout May2020

I thought about it weeks ago, before the world went crazy, and wasn't sure if I could do it. But apparently my coping mechanism for global pandemics is to sew all the things. So I am in, and with a bigger pledge than I was expecting:

I, Ros, pledge to wear ONLY handmade clothes (with the named exceptions below) throughout May 2020.

Permitted exceptions:
1. Underwear
2. Jeans
3. Leggings
4. Denim jacket.

I always look forward to this time of year for this particular "challenge" and I am so thankful that it is here during this time! Things feel weird and upside down and loopy and establishing small reminders of what "normal" is or might be has been wonderful in keeping the days from flowing together or myself from becoming constantly overwhelmed. So for MMM2020, I, Brittani, pledge to:

+ Continue my journey of wearing 100% Me Made every day (undergarments included, but not shoes!) while simultaneously partaking in the Project 333 challenge.

+ Work on altering or fixing my "to mend" pile

+ Sew through a sizeable chunk of my WIP Pile

+ Create more garments that are gardener--friendly

I know I will not complete some of these 100%, but I love having them on my list as that gentle reminder for when I feel lost as to what I can do.

Thank you; this could be just the antidote I need.

For Me-Made-May 2020, I, Liz Haywood of www.lizhaywood.com.au and @lizhaywood3754, plan to (gently) do the following:

Wear me-made clothes every day, preferably styled in an interesting and untried way.

Put more thought and effort into getting dressed every day, because, quite frankly, sartorial standards have been slipping around here.

Wear the zero waste samples (all me-made) from my book Zero Waste Sewing, which are just sitting here in a box now that all book talks and workshops are cancelled. I wouldn't let (the ones that fitted me) be part of my wardrobe because I needed them for show-and-tell, but now I will wear them without reservation.

Bagqueen said...

I love MMM and I have participated on and off since the first one, although I haven’t always documented it on social media. This year it will be good for me get out of my pyjamas!! Part of MMM for me is also to rationalise my wardrobe & not keep making stuff I don’t need, so many of my photos could just be reruns of last year. So for my pledge I will post on IG daily, something that I have made Sometimes I will be wearing it and sometimes it will be for someone else. I will try and wear something* me made each day but I won’t bore you with same old same old! Not that I kid myself that anyone will remember my photos from last year!!!

For the first time in four years (likely longer), travel has not been a big part of my life, and five weekends (so far) in a row have been at home with no plans. Sewing has become my way of creating a new normal, and though I only have a few me mades (at the moment), very excited to take part in my first Me Made May! Now to see how many pieces I can add through the rest of April to help in my pledge.

I, Patty D, @sewparadox, pledge to wear a me made twice per week throughout May 2020.

Béa said...

This will be my 7th MMM, and I'm still loving it! Thank you Zoe for keeping it going through these strange times. I'll be working from home throughout May (it seems unlikely that we'll be back to "normal" just yet), and that involves a lot of sitting on the floor, because I've got no work desk! So I *will* be rocking the yoga pants & leggings for the foreseeable. What I need to do for MMM is make sure they are banging not boring.

So...

I Béa of www.beassewingadventures.wordpress.com (@missbeacurtis on Instagram) pledge to wear Me Made clothing every day. This will include any garment made, mended, embellished or upcycled by me. I'm also going to use this as an opportunity to embed good lockdown habits, by photo-documenting my Me Made outfits during my daily walks (to make sure that I do actually go out more, yay for Internet Accountability).

Before lockdown I’d only sewn about 2 garments. I’ve somehow completed about 5 since I’ve been cooped up!

For MMM my challenge for myself is to wear every one of my me maxes at least once. I’m hoping this will help me to know what patterns to remake and what changes need to be made for me to really love the first of some of my makes.

I’ll post what I can on Instagram @kidseatbooks

Unknown said...

This is my second time attending MMM but the first time with an offical pledge on here.

As I wear at least one selfmade clothing item every day I will try to wear outfits that are completly selfmade every day (besides bras, undies, socks and shoes) and also try to wear more of the items I've made a longer time ago (I tend to mostly wear my newest makes).

Also I will try to dedicate each week a theme. Week one (01.05-10.05.) will be blouses, week two (11.05.-17.05.) will be shirts, week three (18.05.-24.05.) will be dresses and skirts and week four (25.05.-31.05.) will be pants and jumpsuits and I will try to wear a different theme-item every day during the theme's week.

I'll try to document my challenge on Instagram @juma_made_

Last spring I was sewing nonstop and when I saw people posting about Me Made May about midway through the month I put a reminder on my calendar for this year. Now it's almost May again, I had lost inspiration over the winter anyway and all I've really sewn lately are masks, plus I haven't gotten dressed in real clothes more than a time or two in the last 6 weeks. I wasn't going to participate because who's going to see me anyway? but reading the backstory of the challenge and what it's really about made me decide this could be really good for me. I'm hoping that getting dressed will make me feel more normal and that putting on garments I made but haven't worn since last summer will give me back some inspiration and motivation. So, I, Alex, pledge to wear at least one different item I've made each day in May.

I live in Beijing and we're already on day 99 of our COVID-19 experience and for most of that time I've had a sewing machine and I have been sewing up a storm! I've completed projects from a couple of years ago, made new items using up a lot of my fabric stash that I brought over with me as well new fabric that I've bought here and whilst visiting the Philippines and Malaysia. I now need to slow down and think about what gaps I have in my wardrobe, and how I can incorporate my new makes into the rest of my wardrobe. I, Gemma, plan to wear at least one item of memade clothing everyday and to record different outfit combinations on Instagram.

I have only recently started sewing again in 2019. I am really a beginner, but very enthusiastic! Before this COVID-19 thing, My New Year's resolution was to not buy any new clothes this year. Not even underwear. So far so good, it's been easy 'cause of the "situation." (I am missing my trips to thrift stores though, I love to refashion and upcycle.) I've had a fabric stash for 30 years that I am using now and fortunately my local print shop is printing patterns for me! For #memademay, I vow to keep challenging myself and to wear something I make each day, and to try and share my journey of learning on Instagram.

I, Sarah L. Crowder (@codenamesarah on IG), pledge to wear self-made garments at least three times a week throughout May 2020. I'm not promising photos or new garments, but I'm doing it just to give myself a feeling of normalcy, as I participate almost every year.

I, Sarah, (@a.liitle.quiet -IG) will attempt to wear at least one me made garment a day and document said garment during the month of May 2020'.

Thank you Zo for this.

I, Odette Scott (@odettescott), will wear me-made every day and attempt to wear wholly me made outfits during May (excluding shoes, bags and coats). I will endeavour to document this on Instagram (my biggest challenge). I will use this process to consider what me-made items are missing from my wardrobe and understand the reason why any me-makes are unworn after a month.

I, Claire, (@clairelizzie3774 on IG), pledge to wear at least one me made garment a day and document on IG for the month of May 2020. I'm not sure how many items I have actually made, only starting probably sewing clothes for myself last May! It will be interesting to get them all out.

Juliette said...

I, Juliette (@juliettemijeon on IG) pledge to wear at least one me-made garment a day, in unique combinations, for the month of May 2020. For the duration of Me-Made-May, I will also try to keep sewing from my stash, using only fabrics that coordinate with whatever thread and other notions I have available, so as not to go fabric/haberdashery-shopping more than necessary. I will also use Me-Made-May as an opportunity to identify what's missing in my wardrobe.

As a side note : I'm of 2 minds on my self-imposed fabric/haberdashery shopping ban. Here in France we're still contained until May 11th (at least), so I try not to go out more than necessary (especially since we have to fill in a form every time we leave home, specifying our reason for going out), and I also think it's better to leave a better access to fabric/haberdashery stores to people who are making masks, scrubs and so on (which I can't, since I'm working from home full time and I'm not "au chômage partiel" (not sure what the translation of this would be.)). But on the other hand, I feel like I should do something to support my local fabric shops, and buying from them would be the least I could do...Anyone else feel the same?

Thank you so much Zoë for organising Me-Made-May again this year of pandemic lockdown! It is heartwarming meeting all the enthusiastic sewists and changing encouraging comments. It’s already my seventh year, after using flickr, then Pnterest, now IG. My pledge hasn’t really changed from last years:

I endeavor to wear as many me-made garments as possible including lingerie and activewear each day of May 2019. I will try taking a picture most of the days to better know my outfits and to discover the gaps in my wardrobe. This helps me better knowing my wardrobe, the pictures are more honest than the mirror. I am not a planning person, so I would grab the outfit spontaneously in the mornings trying to create new outfits.

justsewtherapeutic said...

Hi Zoe, thanks for organising this again. It’s a bit of an odd one this year isn’t it? When the lockdown first started what I wore didn’t seem important in the grand scheme of things but as time goes on I’ve realised I find comfort in things that are familiar, even if it’s just putting on a bit of lippie and a nice frock. I think Me Made May will prove to be so important for all of us this year, it’s a way to give each other support, inspiration and some semblance of normality in a very abnormal situation. And so ‘I Helen, of justsewtherapeutic, pledge to wear me made clothes and create one garment a week throughout the month of May’

Hi Zoe,
Thanks for hosting again, this will be my fifth year in a row of participating and I look forward to this every May. So happy that despite the current situation you have decided to bring back this lovely and gentle challenge. I'm still trying to keep some normality going and getting dressed in my 'good' clothes every day, as well as doing my hair and make-up and I'm really looking forward to focusing on my me made garments and celebrating both the things that unite us but also are unique to us. For these reasons I , Vicki aka @cathywafs on Insta, pledge to wear at least one handmade garment every day and not to repeat any outfit combinations as much as possible throughout May 2020. I will also aim to finish any minor repairs and refashions that are outstanding and try to evaluate the gaps that remain in my hand made wardrobe'.

Anne-Rose said...

This is the sixth year that I am taking part in Me Made May, although last year I only documented some of my outfits. Let’s see how it goes this year! These are strange times we’re living in, I’m working from home and I do get dressed each day, but I am wearing different outfits than I would normally do when going into the office. No daily commute has freed up extra time for sewing so I have some new items to wear as well. I don’t think committing to a specific number of days or items per week will be helpful for me in the current situation, so I’ll just do my best to play along, document my outfits on Instagram (@annerosevandijk) and enjoy seeing what everyone else is wearing!

Hi! I have looked with admiration at others’ #MMM posts for several years now, and today I finally found the source! Thank you for this great idea, and thanks, too, for continuing with it this year. I, Anna of Anna-Jo Sews, pledge to wear at least two me-made garments in a unique combination every day throughout May 2020. I'm planning to keep things casual, comfy and in my style, and will hopefully be uploading an outfit pic to Instagram every day (@anna_jo_sews) as well as doing at least one round up post on the blog. Ideally I'd like to do them every Friday, but we'll see about that.

I'm hoping I'll discover a few new ideas for outfit combinations using my existing clothes, as well as coming up with a few ideas for items to sew that will go with lots of my existing garments to make new outfits.

I hope everyone has fun with their challenges! I always love taking part in Me Made May and learn a lot about my wardrobe in the process.

Ann said...

During this time at home, my husband finally finished building our closet - we live in an 1860s house that doesn't have ANY so he converted a tiny bedroom into our closet. When I moved my clothes in, I suddenly made the decision to ONLY put in clothing that I loved. Which meant that even some things that I had been wearing several times a week to work, or something that was gorgeous and new but for some reason I never put on, or things that just gave me a bad feeling I pulled out (and piled in the spare room, but that will be another project....). So now I just have things I love in my closet, and a lot of them were the things I had made. My overall goal is to dress with more variety instead of relying on the same old same old, to not save my "good" clothes for occasions and to continue to supplement with handmade garments.
I, Ann, pledge to wear at least one item of me-made clothing throughout may even if the only place I am going is taking the dog for a walk around the block or sitting on my back porch. I will attempt to document this with photos, but that part will probably go to sh&t pretty fast.....

I don't know exactly what to do. I'm good at being legalistic but that's not gentle. So, I thought I'd challenge myself in stages-
take inventory of what I use/don't wear, what I have to complete, what resources I have on hand, and what I could start new. I would like to make 40s and 50s style blouses for myself.

(I have bins of unfinished projects that I've been wanting to complete. This "stay at home" season I've tackled bread making and a container garden. I was thinking of moving on to sewing when I found out about the challenge.)

I won’t be able to post daily, maybe by next year I’ll have more to wear/share? Today I will post to IG a pic (minus my face -cuz…shy) I’m wearing a crocheted granny square shrug (I hope that’s acceptable?) that I made last year with yarn my mother had leftover from her various projects. It has been chilly & gray today! Also, I’m bummed cuz I just finished a pair of linen gauchos (which I failed to toile or try on as I was sewing 🤦‍♀️cuz -the sewing itself was so fun)….turned out WAY TOO big! I am now taking them completely apart! 😔 -learning
-
My Pledge— I “Ro” (my nick name) pledge #1-TO wear the few me mades I have at least once this month. #2- TO not let my gaucho disappointment get the best of me! I will do my best to get them wearable by the end of the month! #3- Most importantly, I “Ro” pledge to give “hearts” and/or words of positivity, encouragement, and understanding to those who appear in my IG feed regardless if they are participating in #memademay2020 or not, as often as I am able!👍

Peace and Gentleness to ALL!🌸

I Hannah of @hannah_bnana1 (IG) pledge to wear something me made every day in May 2020 (even if it’s just undies)!

I, @laakre_laga, pledge to wear something memade every day throughout May 2020, and try to find new combinations in my memade wardrobe.

Thank you 'So Zo', I've been so depressed, I didn't think I would participate this round. But now that I've stopped by, I think this is probably just what I might need to feel normal again.

I, pao of projectminima.blogspot.com, pledge to wear my handmade clothes everyday in May and maybe even prove it by taking pictures and posting them on my blog.

I’ll be using the MMM gentle challenge to review my Me Made wardrobe, document photographically via social media (Instagram veronica.fiberantics and blog, fiberanticsbyveronica.com), and organize photos in my digital albums. I would also like to investigate color blocking and scrap busting for a new MM garment.

I , @museflette on Instagram pledge to wear & post a memade everyday throughout May 2020 and hopefulle also make a few more items. I will rerun garments as I dont have that many memades yet.

We, Judith, Delphine and Melissa, creators of @flora.l.design, pledge to wear our Me-Mades more often throughout May 2020, to share our experiences with making and wearing Me-Made clothing and accessories, and to finish some of our forgotten and abandoned Me-Made projects.

Hi, thank you for managing this Zoe, I don’t know about following Priest Wisdom, but here goes:

I, Diana Madden, @redski23, pledge to wear at least 25% me-made and post an outfit photo to instagram at least once a week. I am a shameless user of pattern hashtags when researching and rarely (possibly never?) post, and as I am older and not slim it seems like I should try, even with my utterly challenged photo capabilities, sharing to give more research images to others.
I further pledge to complete the three works in progress hanging over my head: a Suki robe about 3/4 there, a Japanese pattern book wrap dress all cut out and with me-made bias tape prepared for seam finishes, and finally a skirt from the same book along with a top in same fabric also cut out and ready to go. Finally, I will make alterations to my Sew LA Vintage Pocket Skirt—new waist band and reseam panels to reduce circumference; and shorten the lining of the Wiksten Haori, insert twill tape to stabilize the length (double gauze grows and the woven cotton shell doesn’t, I think) and move the patch pockets a bit lower. Love both and want to wear them.
Take care and be safe sewing community people!

I, back.to.stitch, pledge to use the month of May (and the encouragement of all you lovely people) to wear my memades every day, to take note of what I need or wear most, and to find new ways to wear the things I have made. I’m trying to pay attention to what works for me and my lifestyle, and not just sew things because they are so darn beautiful! Lol

I have worn me mades for 8 days straight despite not leaving the house. It has made me feel good. Good about my ability to make clothes. Good about how I look in the clothes. It has inspired me to try on the things i dont wear and try and fix them. I am new to clothes sewing and self taught so first few items were not great. Now my skills have improved i am revisiting the less than perfect. A nip here a tuck there. Today will attempt to put a lining in a top i made very early which turned out great but the fabric is soooooo itchy.
Glad to be sharing me made may with you all

I recently found out that I am supposed to pledge here if I am participating in MeMadeMay2020. I wear me made clothing everyday but I pledge to post a photo for MeMadeMay on Instagram whenever my photographer is available (so it won't be everyday). I already have been posting...just didn't formally post the pledge here until today. Thanks for the fun challenge Zoe!

After being in relationship with Him for Five years, he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. but one day I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should rather contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that never believed in love spell, I had no choice than to try it, I mailed the spell caster, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the fake ones out there. Anybody could need the help of the spell caster, his email: druguelspellhome1@gmail.com you can email him or WhatsApp him on +2347056683626 if you need his assistance in your relationship or anything.

I am sharing this testimony to partners suffering in their relationships because there is an enduring solution.
My husband left me and our 2 kids for another woman for 3 years. I tried to be strong just for my kids but I could not control the pains that torment my heart. I was hurt and confused. I needed a help, so i did a research on the internet and came across a site where I saw that Dr. Aluya a spell caster, can help get lovers back. I contacted him and he did a special prayer and spells for me. To my surprises, after some days, my husband came back home. That was how we reunited again and there was a lot of love, joy and peace in the family.
You can as well contact Dr.  Aluya  , a powerful spell-caster for solutions on his contact aluya.48hoursspelltemple@gmail.com or directly on Whats App: +2348055431163
